A game of fluctuating fortunes and a grandstand finale saw Burntwood come from behind to beat second in the table Crewe and Nantwich.
When the sides met earlier in the season at The RCI Sportsway the result hinged on the final kick of the game but the penalty kick for a Burntwood win slipped wide and the Cheshire side won by two points. On this occasion Kian Carter stayed calm under pressure to convert his side’s fourth try to edge his side home by two points.
It was Carter who had opened the scoring after two minutes with a penalty goal but the hosts went ahead on the half hour mark with a well-worked try and conversion.
Jack Johnson’s side responded with a break through midfield by Billy Fisher to send Aidan Barker away to the try line and Burntwood led by a point.
The Cheshire side regained the lead with an unconverted try by the right winger followed by a penalty from a scrummage offence to leave the half time score at 15-8 to the hosts.
The right winger crossed again early in the second period to extend his side’s lead to 12 points. Tom Shorrock narrowed the deficit to five points when he scored from a tapped penalty to reward solid play by the forwards. Carter converted.
Crewe and Nantwich capitalised on a handling error to score a converted try to leave Burntwood twelve points adrift with ten minutes left to play so they threw everything into attack.
Josh Canning charged in for a try from 15 metres with defenders hanging off him and Carter added the extras.
Burntwood continued to press and in the last handling move of the game replacement Harry Heath powered his way over the line to bring the scores level. Carter stepped up to strike the match-winning conversion to seal an excellent win for the visitors.
Burntwood 2nds also gained five league points but without having to take the field. Opponents Aldridge had insufficient front row players available for the fixture and conceded a walkover to Dan Black’s side.
Burntwood 3rds did take to the field and despite competing well with a side lacking match practice lost away to Barton-u-Needwood 2nds by 27-0.
After four games on the road, Burntwood play their first home league game since the end of November this Saturday when they welcome league leaders Whitchurch to The RCI Sportsway. The Shropshire side’s only league defeat this season was by Burntwood back in October. The 2nds travel to face Stafford 2nds.
