Burntwood ended the season as they began it with a win against Tamworth. They ran in six tries to two to finish in 7th place with eleven wins and eleven losses from 22 games in a topsy–turvey season.
It took 12 minutes for Jack Johnson’s side to progress into the home half and open the scoring. Line out possession was moved infield and then back right for Aidan Barker to cut in and set up a ruck from which scrum half Jack Butcher dived over for the try.
The visitors scored again seven minutes later when Tamworth were driven off their own set scrum for Luke Rookyard to touch down and Alfie Broadhurst to convert.
Burntwood should have added to their tally before the break with Sam Hull being bundled into touch following a break by Alex Smail and then a high tackle on Hull cost Tamworth a player to the sin bin.
A great move close to half time saw a three man overlap squandered which enabled the home side to launch a swift counter attack from their own 22 down the right wing for a superb try in the corner.
Neil Holden’s strong run right on the half time whistle came to nothing when his offload was knocked on to leave the score at 12-5.
Dan Clements made a tackle-breaking run from a scrum on halfway four minutes into the second period and from the ensuing ruck Ben Holt sent a kick pass out left for Barker to catch and score. Broadhurst added the conversion.
On 51 minutes a good handling move saw Smail go close again and when possession was moved infield, Holden picked a good line to storm his way over for the bonus point try. Broadhurst’s conversion made it 26-5.
Three minutes later and Barker benefited from another Holt kick as he outpaced the cover defence to reach the ball first and dot down.
A period of midfield stalemate in the warm conditions was broken in the 73rd minute with Holden bursting into the home 22. His run earned a scrum followed by a penalty which Holt kicked to the left corner. A well-rehearsed front of the line move saw Rookyard add to his impressive tally for the season.
The hosts had the last say when their left winger went on an electric, diagonal run and was only halted close to the try line. However, his support arrived to drive over for an unconverted try to end proceedings with the conversion attempt rebounding off a post.
Burntwood seconds pushed second in the table Bloxwich all the way at the RCI Sportsway in the final league match of their season. The led 21-5 early on but eventually went down 45-36 in a hugely enjoyable contest.
Try scorers for Mack Johnson’s side were Harry Heath, Will Fletcher, Liam Robbins, Riley Bailey and Alex Rich. Matt Wenlock-Evans added four conversions and a penalty goal.
The league seasons may be over but Burntwood still have a Staffs Intermediate Trophy semi-final to play away to holders Willenhall. The proposed date of 16th May is still to be confirmed.
